Issues in ATM Support of High-Performance, Geographically Distributed Computing

چکیده
This report experimentally assesses the effect of the underlying network in a cluster-based computing environment. The assessment is quantified by application-level benchmarking, process-level communication, and network file input/output. Two testbeds were considered-one small cluster of Sun workstations and another larger cluster composed of 32 high-end IBM RS/6000 platforms. The clusters had Ethernet, fiber distributed data interface (FDDI), Fibre Channel, and asynchro-nous transfer mode (ATM) network interface cards installed, providing the same processors and operating system for the entire suite of experiments. The primary goal of this report is to assess the suitability of an ATM-based, local-area network to support interprocess communication and remote file input/out-put systems for distributed computing.

G EOGRAPHICALLY D ISTRIBUTED C OMPUTING : ATM over the NASA ACTS Satellite
This paper outlines some of the problems and the solutionsdeveloped to support geographically distributed computing via ATM. In particular, applications developed with the Parallel Virtual Machine (PVM) [1] message passing library, communicating via ATM at OC3c speeds (155 Mbps) through the NASA ACTS satellite are considered. A primary goal of this work is to assess the suitability of an ATM-ba...
متن کاملAn ATM-based Distributed High Performance Computing System
We describe the distributed high performance computing system we have developed to integrate together a heterogeneous set of high performance computers, high capacity storage systems and fast communications hardware. Our system is based upon Asynchronous Transfer Mode (ATM) communications technology and we routinely operate between the geographically distant sites of Adelaide and Canberra (sepa...
متن کاملSoftware Infrastructure for the I-WAY High-Performance Distributed Computing Experiment
High-speed wide area networks are expected to enable innovative applications that integrate geographically distributed, high-performance computing, database, graphics, and networking resources. However, there is as yet little understanding of the higher-level services required to support these applications, or of the techniques required to implement these services in a scalable, secure manner. ...
متن کاملBLAST: broadband lightweight ATM secure transport for high-performance distributed computing
This paper investigates the use of ATM for cluster based computing. The need for a native ATM API is discussed as well as the performance of message passing libraries (MPL) that are written to use such an API to exploit the advantages of a high-speed network for cluster-based computing. The MPLs offer a standard interface, such as PVM or MPI, and interoperate with existing TCP/IP and UDP/IP bas...
متن کاملAn Experiment in Parallel Computing over a Heterogeneous ATM-Based MAN
The advent of high-speed local and wide area networks has made geographically distributed NOWs an appealing platform for supercomputing applications. In particular, ATM is an emerging standard that seems to meet the communication requirements of such applications. This paper presents the results of performance tests of a real-world parallel program over a heterogeneous ATM-based public metropol...
